Music in Sion Hill
Music is an integral part of school life here in Sion Hill. We believe that all students should be given the opportunity to express themselves through music. There is a long standing tradition of music in the school which is continued in both the music classroom and in our extra-curricular music programme.
We aim to provide a general education in music for all students with a passion for music and to encourage the development of musical creativity and sensitivity through active involvement in performing, composing and listening to music.
While we use many different approaches to music education, we engage in particular with Kodaly’s principles of music education in the classroom.
We have three voluntary choirs; Sion Hill Junior Choir, Sion Hill Senior Choir and Sion Hill Leaving Cert Choir. The choirs rehearse twice weekly outside of school hours. The Leaving Cert Choir aims to prepare students for the Leaving Cert practical exams and is open to students taking Leaving Cert music as a subject. All choirs are kept busy throughout the year. They perform as separate choirs as well as joining forces at various events such as choir competitions and our annual School Carol Service.
For any instrumentalists from 1st to 6th year, we have a school orchestra who rehearse once a week. The orchestra provides music for events such as our School Mass, our Carol Service and our School Musical.
A school musical is produced every two years. This is open to students from 1st to 6th year and is a huge event in our school calendar. Our most recent musicals include The Sound of Music and Beauty and the Beast.
Private piano, violin and guitars are provided by instrumental teachers to interested students.

Art Club in Dominican College Sion Hill
Established in 2003, The Art Club (a.k.a. “The Red Stairs”) initially catered for students who didn’t have Art as a chosen subject but expressed an interest in it. Since then, the club has grown in size and stature, and is now responsible for many of the school’s creative and artistic tasks. The Art Club runs from 3.30pm to 4.30 pm every Tuesday afternoon.
