Class of 2020 Award Recipients
On Wednesday evening, the school welcomed the trophy recipients from the class of 2020 for a short, socially distanced presentation of their school awards. We commend these students for their achievements and we wish them every success as they embark on the next exciting stage of their educational journey.
StandUp Week at Sion Hill
To mark StandUp week, the student council spread rainbow flags throughout the school. Rainbows remind us of possibilities, opportunities and hope. The colours of the rainbow come together to produce one light. In our school, we celebrate diversity and, like the rainbow, we walk together in strength.

Children talk about lockdown issues at TED talk event
Children have been talking about issues that emerged for them during lockdown and about the importance of children's rights at an online event.
The Child Talks event, from the TED Talk series, was dedicated to children and young people.
Children's Ombudsman Dr Niall Muldoon said the event gave a unique voice to young people's inspiring stories and issues they feel concerned about during the pandemic to date.

Our final group of TY's, 4 Amber, got the chance to cook on Monday (16 November) afternoon. A huge thank you to Vanessa from Cooks Academy for joining us and working with the girls over the past 3 weeks.
All TY's classes recently completed a nature themed scavenger hunt. They were tasked with finding a feather, tree bark, a rock, twig, 4 different types of leaves, a pine cone and a wild flower. They also had to include "Something straight, something round, something smooth, something rough".
Penalty Shootout for Concern
The Students took on the Teachers in a penalty shootout today to raise funds and awareness for @concern. Despite the best efforts of the teachers, students emerged victorious. #wellbeing #sport #giving @lecheiletrust

Tie-dye fashion at Sion Hill

Blackrock College Radio
Over the past number of weeks TY's have researched and written a radio show for Blackrock College Radio. It was recorded in Sion Hill this week and will be broadcast in the coming days. After School Sport
All after school sport is cancelled today due to the weather
TY students learning new skills and enjoying crafting knitted Christmas decorations for the festive season.
Cooks Academy returned this week to work with 4 Opal. Chicken caesar salad and chocolate chip cookies were on the menu. It was a great afternoon.
The Show Must Go On
Sion Hill will present 'The Show Must Go On', our virtual concert, in 2021. The audition deadline is fast approaching and we look forward to getting started and showcasing the wonderful talent in our school.

Sion Hill: Marine Ambassadors 2020/21
Dominican College Sion Hill, Co. Dublin, have been selected as the Marine Ambassador school for the Global Citizenship: Marine Environment theme for 2020/2021. The November issue of the Green Schools e-zine explains "Green-Schools were strongly impressed by the school’s hands-on engagement in their first year working on the theme, and we are excited to see what this year brings for them". Soccer and Bootcamp Tuesday

On Monday 2 November TY's took part in a Cookery class with Vanessa from "Cooks Academy". Chocolate chip cookies and chicken caesar salad were on the menu. It was a great afternoon.
Transition Year Update
Transition Year students had a busy start to the year. During their first week back the students took part in a number of induction sessions which included a murder mystery and our very first virtual guest speaker. This guest speaker was Niall from Gaisce who explained what is involved in completing the Bronze Gaisce Award.
The following week students went to Causey Farm for a team building day. Activities included baking bread, Irish dancing and feeding the farm animals. Tuesday afternoon activities have included Drama, a Scavenger Hunt & Photography Competition, Walking History Tour of Blackrock and the Make a Wish Leadership Programme.
All students completed the Health and Safety Authority online course – “Get Safe, Work Safe: Health and Safety in the Workplace for Students Starting Work”. Following this students embarked on work placements in various settings. A number of students have been working with Blackrock Tidy Towns every week and have done trojan work in litter picking, weeding and planting bulbs/flowers.
We organised a Zoom chat with a class group from St Michael’s House Grosvenor School. At the end of September JCPA certs were presented with Teddy’s Ice Cream serving 99s to celebrate. Just before exam week the students took part in Urban Orienteering and a winter collection for homelessness.

The English Department
is pleased to announce details of a 2020 Writing Competition, a unique opportunity for students with an interest in creative writing.
‘Life in 2020’
Entry and Submission Guidelines:
Students should submit one piece of work exploring ‘Life in 2020’ in line with the following guidelines:
The piece of creative writing may be of any genre
(eg. Short Story, Descriptive, Feature article, Memoir, Personal Essay )
Juniors (1st,2nd,3rd Years): 1,500 - 2,000 words in length
Seniors (4th, 5th, 6th Years): 2,500 - 3,000 words in length
All submissions should be typed in Times New Roman, font size 12 and double spaced.
Your submission should be sent as a .pdf file to e firstname.lastname@example.org by Friday, November 6th at 5pm. No submissions will be accepted past this deadline.
A prize of a €100 One4All voucher will be presented to a Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle winner. In addition, the winners’ pieces will be shared with the entire school community.

Beth Sweeney - Naughton Scholar 2020
Warm congratulations from all of us as Sion Hill to Beth Sweeney (Head Girl, Class of 2020) who has been announced as one of the 2020 Naughton Scholarship winners. The Naughton Scholarship program rewards students for their accomplishments to date and encourages and supports them through their undergraduate studies in science, technology, engineering and maths. Beth is currently studying for a Physics degree in UCD and we wish her every success for her future.
Leadership Awards and School Quiz
On Friday afternoon the school leaders for 2020/21 were officially announced by the 6th years. We congratulate our Head Girl Palakshi, Deputy Head Girls Lara and Rachel and all the prefects, student council members and committee members. To celebrate, the 6th years organised a socially distanced, Halloween themed quiz for the whole school. Congratulations to 4 Amber on their victory. A great afternoon was had by all and we thank our 6th years for their dedication and enthusiasm.
TY's took part in a morning of Urban Orienteering on Wednesday 14th October. It was a cold but bright morning and all the girls completed a course that included Blackrock Park, the Rock Road to Booterstown, Booterstown Avenue, Mount Merrion Avenue, Cross Avenue and the surrounding side roads. Well done to all, especially The GBH"s who won, scoring a maximum 14 points.

Message of Hope at Opening Mass
The Sion Hill Community gathered today using Google Meet for our Opening School Mass. The theme was hope and optimism. Special thanks to Fr Peter O'Kane for celebrating this important event in our school year and to our religion and music departments, talented musicians, singers and readers for their valued contributions.
Sr Margaret MacCurtain O.P. (Benvenuta) RIP
It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Sr Margaret MacCurtain O.P (Benvenuta) today. Margaret McCurtain joined the teaching staff of Dominican College Sion Hill in 1953 before a distinguished career in the History Department at UCD from 1964 - 1994.
Historian, Diarmuid Ferriter paid tribute to Margaret on her 90th birthday last year.

Congratulations to our Transition Year Students who were awarded their JCPA certificates on Wednesday. We congratulate them on showing commitment and determination in a challenging year. Students enjoyed a Teddy's ice-cream as part of a socially distanced celebration with their classmates and year heads.
